Field Trip - Grade 3 to 5 Engineering Challenge Day
Suggested Grades: 3 to 5
Suggested Time: 5.5 hours + 30min lunch break
Class of: 25 students (email for pricing of larger groups)
Students will learn and explore:
- Learn about the Simplified Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test)
- Work with and communicate ideas in a group or with partners
- Use critical thinking skills to solve various design challenges
- Safe use practices of materials and tools (scissors, glue, tape, elastics, etc)
- Manage materials and material costs to their project
Activities:
- Plastic Cup Stack Challenge (Team Wake-up and communicate): Students will be given specific materials to use such as plastic cups and popsicle sticks. They will need to stack all cups without any touching.
- Plastic Cup Stack Challenge 2 (Team work & Communication): Students will be given specific materials such as plastic cups, string, and elastics. They will need to work together with their group to stack 6 standing cups.
- Pick the Ping Pong: Students will work in groups to engineer a device that will pick up a ping pong ball and move it to a designated space. Students that use the least amount of materials and successfully retrieve the ping pong ball from the furthest distance win the most points.
